Re: Pex Heated Floor Systems
That's a huge topic to give feedback on. As far as the system itself - I would put hydronic heating in my own home without question.
Now as far as being straightforward - you have to look at flow rates, loop and zone temperature depending on floor covering, will you use remote headers or home runs, what is the heat loss for each zone, will you use circulators for each zone or one main circulator, what heat source will you use - geothermal, solar, propane, natural gas, electric, and will it be a heat pump, mod con boiler, etc. After you get all those variables figured out it can be a fairly straight forward endeavor. I don't want to discourage you from using it - just hire someone that knows what they are doing. I've seen several small projects that inexperienced people have done and it turns into a rats nest and doesn't work. I would hate to have to come back on these systems and try and troubleshoot them. Do a search for hydronic pros - they have several books and software packages that will help with hydronic design and also tying them into other alternative heat sources. |

Re: Pex Heated Floor Systems
I built an airplane hangar with a 1200 sqft apartment recently in alaska. It has two infloor zones, one upstairs baseboard zone and a converted elec water heater for demand storage of PW on a Quietside GV9 125000btu NG fired boiler. It's now three years old. So far it's been reliable and pretty efficient. I think the tube was weirsbo 5/8ths tube only because the plumber spec't it.

Re: Pex Heated Floor SystemsQuote:
I had an old Montgomery wards boiler at about 78% eficancy. Bought a new triangle tube 95% boiler so it ought to be a real difference. Any loop cant be more than 300' long. The old boiler vented thru a chimney that looked like it was ready to fall on the house next door. The new boiler Im venting with PVC thru a glass block window. |
