P-trap Question

when ever I put in a sink or shower my p-traps almost always have a real slow weeping leak. I always clean the plastic gaskets and make sure there is no tension on the pipes. I hand tighten plus 3/4 turn. Am I missing something?
thanks,
Jon

I assume you're talking about PVC slip joint type traps.
It could be slight defects in the mating surfaces of the fittings (cheap traps.) Or it could be you just need a little more torque beyond the 1/4 turn you mentioned.
I seldom have this problem, but when I do, I apply a thin coat of RectorSeal #5 to the bevel washers and re-tighten. That usually takes care of it.
Another option is to buy some of the rubber bevel washers and use them in place of the plastic ones. I keep a few of these in 1 1/2" and 1 1/4" on the turck for just such cases. They are more pliable and conform to irregular surfaces better. They're particularly handy when trying to get a new trap weir arm to seal properly to an old galvanized stub out.

Good luck, and let me know if this helps.

Re: P-trap Question

My plumber friend showed my a trick he uses on a job we were on once.
He takes a wax ring and coats the threads with the wax and then tightens them back up (not too tight). Stopped the weeps everytime.

Re: P-trap Question

I will dab a small spot on the treads with pipe dope (since it right there in my tool bag). It lubes it just enough to get it tightened alittle more than with out it.

God Bless,
