Oh Boy

Here's the story.

Bought a home, bathroom had just been re-done.

It's a 3x4' shower stall with marble surround. NO way to get under it but from the downstairs ceiling, which is currently my only option.

Who ever did the install, did not put a trap in the shower drain.

Is adding a trap from the down stairs apartment my only real option? Or do they make any gadjets for this type of problem?

thx!

How do you know the drain doesn't have a trap in it?

Pretty much. It's the easiest for sure.

Re: Oh Boy

I can smell the nasty smell coming out of the drain. The washer drain is exposed and had no trap either, same with the sink. Those were easy fixes though.

I see a drywall ceiling coming down in the near future!

Re: Oh Boy

If traps are missing, there's bound to be some pretty serious stuff covered up of all types. Was this a flipper special?

Slow down. Just because you smell a nasty smell doesn't necessarily mean it's because there is no trap. It's easy enough to tell for sure. Run the shower for 10 seconds, remove strainer plate, shine flashlight down the drain, if there is standing water visible then it is trapped, no standing water no trap.

Another possibility is that water has gotten below the marble and is being held on top of a vinyl liner rather than properly draining out of the weep holes in the drain assembly. This will produce a horendous odor.

Then again, it may be that there is no trap as you say.

Don't assume anything. It's too easy to check and make sure.

As you describe it, if there is no trap, then you will have to go in through the ceiling.

As for washing machine drains, I see improperly installed wm drains all the time in which the stand pipe is exposed and the trap is improperly installed below the floor.

Re: Oh Boy

mdshunk is right if this was actually a situation where no trap was installed then stand by because you are certain to have more woes to come.
