Interesting Problem!
Hello everyone!,
This is my first time posting on this site, so go easy on me ok!! Anyway, I have an interesting problem that I'm hoping someone can help me with. I run the maintenance dept. at an apartment building, and I seem to be having a problem with one line of apartments. It seems that I all of a sudden have hot water coming out of both sides of the faucets. Hot water=hot water, and cold water=hot water!!! The last management had professional plumbers out to take a look at it before I started, and they could not figure out what was going on. Have any of you heard of this happening before? and if so, what should I look for? Thank you in advance for any help you can give. |

Re: Interesting Problem!
I just replaced a mixing valve at my furnace as it was old and the water was staying cool. Could it possibly work the other way and the water is staying hot? Dunno, just a wild guess.

Re: Interesting Problem!
Check to see if one of the units has a hose connected to there shower head, if they do some times this can cause the water to jump between the 2 if the tennant leaves the water on to the shower but shuts off the head end of the hose.
If not see if there is a mixer valve on one of the water closets, this can also cause water jumps. When there is a jump between the 2 waters, you have to look real close for the internecting connections between the 2. Start right from the beginning and work your way to the end on the cold side, and you will find it. Good Luck, and get back to us on what you find. BJD |

Re: Interesting Problem!
When our washing machine broke, we hooked up an old one to our laundry tub while waiting for the appliance repair company. Left the hot and cold water on the laundry tub and it caused hot water out of all faucets in my son's bathroom. Maybe someone has hooked something up somewhere they are not supposed to ...

Bad shower mixer, dishwasher or washer. You can find it by the fixture with the hottest water hitting your hand the quickest. Start in the middle apt, cause you'll have to let cool down and retry a few times.
Or........... could also be the shower head hose thing mentioned above. Bob

Re: Interesting Problem!
You said there are apartments, right? Could anyone have done their own renovations? I plumbed a house for a future bathroom. It order to do a poor mans pressure test I simply looped the hot & cold at the last connection. Filled it with water and no leaks. So I disconnected the water supply and all was done. A year later the owners had half of the bathroom completed, no tub yet. The plumber hooked everything up and guess what. Hot/Hot! When they called me, I knew exactly why. I would highly suspect the washing machine situation if no one does their own renovations. However, I would guess that the problem is within the first unit that is experiencing this on the line and the others are drawing their water from it. I doubt it is going backwards due to the pressure.
