Info On "10 Inch Toilet"

a previous client sent me a request to replace an existing 10" toilet with a 12" toilet. Does this reference the distance away from the wall (for the hookup)? This toilet is on a slab-if this is the case, wouldn't this involve demolishing the concrete around the line, digging into the earth/substrate, moving pipe and reinstall cement (not to mention new toilet)?

I'll find out why this lady is asking for a 12" toilet-it seems as if there are toilets made to fit this application. Any idea on a charge for the job if the demo work is necessary?

Re: Info On "10 Inch Toilet"

The 10" and 12" I believe she is referring to is the 'rough-in dimension from the finished wall'.

The flange center in this case, is the item being measured. For a 12" rough WC, the flange is placed so as to be 12" from the 'tank' wall finished surface.

To change this out on a slab would require breaking the slab to move the underground plumbing.

Prices are yours to make up or figure up due to the differences in labor and overhead. In other words, my price is for my area and labor market, not yours.

BTW, did you ask this woman why she wanted to replace the existing toilet with a 12" rough-in toilet? This might give a clue as to her real motivation. Some nice WC's are available in 10" rough-in and should fit with no real demo work.

it sounds like they rough in the w.c. to close to the wall and thats why they put in a 10" rough w.c. a 12 " wont fit unless you rerough it .

Thank you. After more communication with her, it seems as if the toilet no longer can be plunged. Not sure why it is backed up, but I'm going to recommend roto-rooter to fix the problem as it doesn't sound as if the toilet is the problem. Maybe they think that a 12" toilet is 2" larger and can flush more waste

a 10" rough in toilet is about twice the cost of a standard 12". It would not be very difficult to move it as you would only have to dig down a little bit and put an offset flange in.

Isn't there some code issue related to the use of offset flanges? I can't put my finger on the text, but for some reason that sticks in the back of my mind. I've seen the toilets with the "unifit adaptor" used under such circumstances. It has a piece in the bottom that you change around to make it good for 10, 12, or 14" ruffs. I seem to remember that the famous George Brazil "super trucks", set up for plumbing service, carried one water heater and one unifit toilet.

use your hammers claw to out line the wc on the drywall. then grab a sledge and lightly punch a hole in the wall. so that the wc can fit. chris's quick fix of the day

vwovw I like that, quick and easy, in and out forget outlining the tank, just guesstimate with the sledge.

Toto makes a "uni-fit" Type of toilet. Offset flanges bad.
