How To Slip Poly Onto The Poly Barb Connectors
As I mentioned in a another post, I have a real hard time slipping the poly tube onto the barb, so I used a very small amount of silicone to help ease it on. I have since read that you should never use any type of lubrication to as I did. I'm guessing that there is a chance that the use of some chemical lubicants could effect the poly. So far they have no tendency to slip off or leak even after I pull on it and wiggle it back and forth a bit. I know a lot of these general guide lines are just that very general. I'm wondering if this is one of them. I could imagine if one were to dip the end into a can of motor oil or spay it with a bunch of WD40 future problem could ocurr, but what about a small application of silicone to the barb rubbed on with a paper towel. I myself am not going to dig any of this pipe back up and certainly will not lose any sleep over it. I'm just wondering what you guys have to say about it.
Thanks Rob |

if you used the proper fittings, they should not need to be forced on. Sometimes people confuse Quest fittings for pex fittings. The 2 have slightly different inside diameters.

Actually I picked it up off the net, had to do the traditional "Plumbers Butt Crack"
I also just remembered that when I use red pex pipe it does seem to be a little snugger that others, but still is not a problem |

Are you using black poly pipe or PEX?
If it is black poly pipe, a little vegetable oil on the insert fitting works wonders.

Re: How To Slip Poly Onto The Poly Barb Connectors
soften it w the heat, knock the fittings in square.
dont torch the pipe so bad you have "scar tissue" & let it cool before cranking on the clamp. btw why did you give up on the pcv? id think it would be cake for a former sparky's conduit skills? ray

Re: How To Slip Poly Onto The Poly Barb Connectors
The PVC is real easy to work with, but I was getting tired of glueing and also ran out of pipe so I figured I'd try some poly. It's been a long time since I did electrical work for a living and I forgot how tedious this can be.

Re: How To Slip Poly Onto The Poly Barb Connectors
I'd hate to dig through my tools to find my dusty torch just to get some fittings together so I can crimp them. I would not think vegetable oil would harm the pipe. I use ky just because I always have it handy and it's safe on rubber. haha just joking
, but I bet it would work great

Re: How To Slip Poly Onto The Poly Barb Connectors
I use to race road race motorcycles for a hobby and I crashed my bike in the 1st race of the weekend and was spose to race in 2 other classes. I had to replace my left clip (left side of handle) couldn't get the rubber grip to go on and some old man and woman were walking through the pit area and seen me struggling with this and the old lady opens her purse and hands me some KY jelly to lube the rubber for I can slip it over the bar. Kinda freaked me out a little. Later that weekend I ran into those old folks again. Of course you with some of your buddys and thay yell out "Hey sonny how did that KY jelly my wife gave you do for you???"
Boy did I get some looks from my racing buddys.I sure miss those days! |

Re: How To Slip Poly Onto The Poly Barb Connectors
I carry a heat gun for poly pipe. And for pipe thawing. I move the heat gun a lot so as to not heat it unevenly. You don't want it to melt, but you want it soft enough to slide on. You have to heat it slowly enough that it will heat through.
