How Much To Clean Out Clogged Drain?

I hope it's ok to ask this. If not let me know I'm new.

Recently I had 2 clogged drains. One in kitchen sink, other very slow drain in bathroom. Roto Rooter came unclogged both with snake. Cost around 300 with a 10% discount they gave me for making me wait all night without a call. (Had to reschedule for next morning). Is that a crazy price or is it just me.

By the way I'm in Cincinnati Ohio

Here RR has a $120 min. and two pipes would probably cost $200 or so.... Last janurary I thought i would save some dough and rent a snake and do two seperate properties that were about ready to need it. I knew from the past they were straight shots and very predictable. I saved about $175 and got sicker than a dog for 2 months. Next time I'll pay the pro's.

300 bones...... not a bad price at all, considering they restored the integrity to a plumbing system worth thousands....

surely drains didn't clog in one day, waiting overnight for a callback isn't unreasonable...

Re: How Much To Clean Out Clogged Drain?

Sorry should have probably clarified. I was scheduled for 5-7 on Tuesday night I called around 6:30 was told they were running late. Didn't hear from anyone by 9:00 so i called to reschedule for the next morning.

I don't really want to do it myself b/c my house always runs into problems especially with the plumbing just wondering though was the going rate was.

I think thats high. My plumber charges 45 to show up two drains thats no problem i'm thinking under 150. Now concerning roto router. I had them come back in fall and snake out my main sewer pipe in front yard they charged me 95.00 dollars. But for me personally i have a snake so i probably could of handled those my self. Hell i snaked out the drain pipe from wash machine all the way to the main drain pipe and that only took me a hour. But i have the copper drain pipes so i just went down in crawl space with nut driver took them apart at the rubber connects and snaked them. Actually i got a bunch of like soap residue out of them. It fixed the problem

Ps. next time call around.

You have a cheap plumber, or the prevalent rate is very low in your area per cost of living.

RR gives you a guarantee for their work. I don't know any plumbers in my area that will warranty a snake job for more than a day around here. I have my own Ridgid power snakes but would rather call RR or one of the drain cleaning companies and let them play with the cedar logs if my mains were clogged. It's worth it. Most plumbers in my area that aren't flat rate get @$100-$125 for an hour. The flat rate guys are way high.

Roto-Rooter does not employ liscensed plumbers, if they break something, they can't fix it.

I would only use them to snake out a main. I would never use them for anything else. But, all the trucks I see around here in my travels have a plumbing license and permit number on the truck, not sure if that's just a local thing. In NJ you need a license to break a trap seal, ie :pull a toilet.

My roto router guy also does septic tanks. I seen him one day in the big truck that sucks septic tanks clean. His more a sewer man then a inside the house man if that makes sense. He will also install sewer pipe.

Re: How Much To Clean Out Clogged Drain?

Although I no longer do drain cleaning, I live in a rural area and am familiar with local cleaners.

We only have one who lives in my small town. He charges far too little. Perhaps $55 - $69 per drain. As a result, he has a poor lifestyle and his only equipment is a large snake, a mid-sized snake, and a hand snake. He probably also carries a short piece of ABS pipe, a pipe wrench, and a screwdriver.

He has been begged by backhoe operators to buy a camera, and they are guaranteeing him all their work, but he won't/can't spring for one.

Other cleaners who come into the area typically charge around $300, sell a grease dissolver and/or root killer along with the job to help keep it clean, also have plumbing licenses, have cameras, jetters, and extra equipment so that if one machine breaks, they aren't out of business for two weeks.

Which one would you want to hire?

Re: How Much To Clean Out Clogged Drain?

theres no way I could do a flat rate of $55 - $69 per drain. Some times I`m there for 4 to 6 hours That guy needs to wake up and learn to make the money to upgrade and stay on top of the drain game.

Re: How Much To Clean Out Clogged Drain?

I'll go as low as $75 if they live a couple of miles away just to get my foot in the door for future repairs in my area. The average where I live in Tx is between $85-159. Roto Rooter does employ lic. plumbers, but it's a gamble if you will get one or not. I think most are drain techs. They will train these guys from scratch which I think is great because everyone needs to start somewhere. I like doing business with small companies though. I like it when the guy that has his reputation on the line is holding the tools rather than some guy that does not care if you're satisfied or not. You also save $ by not having to pay 10 other peoples salaries that are sitting at the office on myspace all day. true story
