How Close To The Drain Should The Trap Be?
Carpenter needs to box in the drain pipes in the exposed ceiling below a shower drain, and wants to know if the plumber can have an elbow below the drain, run the drain about 5' to the wall, and then put the trap in the wall. Possible? Thanks in advance.

codes have set distance from drian inlet to trap. looong distances from drain to trap causes a smell souring from drain.

I hate to be the one to say this, but get the plumber out there and quit letting the carpenters tell you how to plumb.

Thanks for the help. It was an appearance thing. Smaller, less prominent bulk-head to cover the drain. But, not if it's going to smell.

It took me 15 minutes to understand the question, Put the trap below the shower, and you can run a 5 foot arm from the trap weir to the san-tee in the wall, when you run a 2 inch pipe. If you are going to install the elbow, the trap takes only about 2-1/2 inches more. Last edited by pcplumber; 10-28-2008 at 03:16 AM. |

IPC says rolling traps are legal up to 30" as of 06',but some areas have not adopted the code yet.

Re: How Close To The Drain Should The Trap Be?
I'm thinking about a regular trap where it is supposed to be. Since he is boxing the pipe, anyway, 2-1/2 inches more should not be that critical. t depends on what type of room is below the shower.

Re: How Close To The Drain Should The Trap Be?
There must be a pretty long piece of
straight pipe above the trap, or it would fit up inside the joist bay? Why did the plumber have to drop it down so far?

Re: How Close To The Drain Should The Trap Be?
Oh. "Exposed beams" in the kitchen below. Which means the trap is in what might constitute the joist bay in an enclosed ceiling. With no ceiling, though, it's right there in plain sight.

Re: How Close To The Drain Should The Trap Be?
If it is an "Exposed Ceiling", Plumb it correctly using BRIGHT Copper or Brass. It will add to the Ambiance of such a beast! That is what an "Exposed Ceiling" is all about! Have these people no sense of Design??
An "Exposed" is to appear "Raw".
