Here Is A Great Question.

Ever since i had the roto router guy rout out my main drain line. I have noticed the water in BOTH of my toilet bowls has been unstable. If you stand there and look the water kind of jingles. Couple of weeks ago i look underneath in crawlspace nothing is leaking and eversince he routed everything is flowing again. My question this isn't anything to worry about is it. It just kind of the damest thing i have ever seen.

Re: Here Is A Great Question.

I'll guess some kind of venting issue and possibly not serious. I lived some places in Colorado where an 80 mph wind would create whitecaps in the toilet and I know the plumbing was to the UPC. I'll guess your system might be looking for some more air. Should be some plumbers along.

Re: Here Is A Great Question.

Pressure variance in the venting system, air is correct, vent could be partly clogged, can you not run some water down the vent with a hose on roof?

The toilets work fine but yes i have a little snake i could send down the vent pipe i live in one story ranch so that not a problem. Unless the roof is slick from the weather than i will have to wait. Dam i should have did it after thanksgiving when i was hanging christmas lights off the gutters on the front of the house. The roof vent is right there for those bathrooms. There his and her bathrooms next to each other. I didn't know that is what the problem was. Actually there is a faucet rite there also on the outside. So which is best hose with water or snake?

Run water down and see if the toilet water moves during this.

Ron is that a good thing or bad thing meaning the water moving. Also how much water should i squirt down it alot alittle it doesn't matter because that vent pipe is hooked up to a drain? It might be a while before i can do it. If i was a betting man i would bet there is snow on the roof back home. Can i just dump a pitcher of water down it. Or do i need the pressure from the hose?

Use the hose, with it on push it to the bottom.

What size is the vent on the roof?

Re: Here Is A Great Question.

I don't know i'm not home to measure it. But i would say it probably 3 inches wide and is a silver metal vent pipe for plumbing like they used back in 63 when the house was built. It vents both of the bathrooms which are next to each other. I can definately get a hose down it. I'm thinking maybe a couple of leaves got in it. I have a big tree on the side of my house and when fall comes alot of leaves end up on the roof. Especially in the gutters. But i cleaned those out.

Re: Here Is A Great Question.

Funny story about hoses down vent pipes...

I was working on the flat roof of a building I once worked at, helping to repair a brick chimney that needed a new cap. We didn't have a nozzle for the water hose we were using on the roof to mix up the mortar, so we turned on the spiggot down below and left it run on the roof. So that we didn't have to work on such a wet roof, I stuck the running hose down a sewer vent pipe when we weren't using it. About 20 minutes later, a frantic lady was yelling up to the roof that water was pouring from the ceiling on the top floor. Aparently, that vent pipe was abandoned. Oops.

I keep a couple of different size/guage screens on my vents. Santa, squirrels and other critters will get stuck occasionally.

I have 2" vents and have been through 3 hurricanes recently, never noticed anything different going on in the in the heads. Beer is my favorite beverage, so I'm in there frequently.
