Help With A Moen Shower Valve

Was at my mothers for Christmas and she asks me to fix a Moen shower valve.

The valve rotates smoothly. It does not pull out at all. The water doesn't turn on.

It hasn't been used in 3 years (at least).

What's the problem?

Re: Help With A Moen Shower Valve

Did around the Moen web site for exploded views. In my area calcium buildup is what kills most of them. Blocks the passageways up.

Replace the cartridge, or there is valves in the off position that is causing it.

Re: Help With A Moen Shower Valve

We have this problem from time to time with new houses that sit on the market for a long time before being sold. Lots of time we just take the handle off and tap on the cartridge stem and it will cause the hard water buildup or whatever is in there to break free and the faucet will work great. Other times we just have to replace the cartridge.

All I ask is CONSISTENCY! Anything less could be considered "Bias" or "Discrimination".

Re: Help With A Moen Shower Valve

What you have to do is pull the handle, cap and escution then the clip that holds the cartridge. Then take a pair of Vice Grips, grab hold of the brass end and pull and wiggle untill it breaks off. Next step is to get an 8lb. hammer and beat the living bejeezus out of the piece of crap and then Call a Plumber to replace the whole valve.

Moen Strikes Again

(fillin in for ya Ron)

You forgot to mention there is no need to shut off the main water valve.

Re: Help With A Moen Shower Valve

turn main water off, take stem out and check for any obstruction. If you don't see anything, with the stem out turn the water on and see if water comes out. (make sure shower door is closed) If the water does then replaced the stem. If no water comes out it might be best to call a plumber.

Re: Help With A Moen Shower Valve

If it's a moen troll valve, could be the balancing spool. You find this on the right side of the valve body, large straight slotted plug, unscrew it and there you will find it.

If it was a troll valve wouldn't it be living under a bridge?

Re: Help With A Moen Shower Valve

Indulge me a little bit... don't Moen shower valves have little screwdriver operated shutoff valves if you take off the escutcheon? ...or is that some other brand? Just wondering. I remember commenting to a builder that I thought it was odd that there were no valves or access panel to a new shower being built and he related that it had screwdriver shutoffs behind the escutcheon built into the valve.

Yes sir there is in the troll and on the posi-temp, always on the troll and not always on the posi-temp. Now I have also come across a failed stop on the valve, if the stop fails to stay open you will get little to no water flow.
