Re: Guess What This Is DoingBINGO, it will be for radiant, the hot water is being fed from a wood burning furnace. instead of a flat plate heat exchanger, we are using this tank for heat transfer. we had some questions regarding btu,s, and recovery, but we are confident this will work. G

Re: Guess What This Is Doing
We did not get fired up today for several reasons, the most interesting thing we learned today while building the system, i will share, maybe someone will be sparred this time consuming mistake. The wood burning furnace has a damper that is tied into an aquastat and a pressure switch. The damper is supposed to open as soon as power is supplied to the unit, this opening supplies the air, to start the fire. We plugged in, the damper failed to open, we jumped the damper motor directly, it opened. So after a couple of hours of trouble shooting, we finally reached the company. Here is the deal, we opted to use a water storage tank, instead of a flat plate heat exchanger, the water storage tank was in the basement, just below the wood furnace, now when you add the lenth of the coil, in the storage tank, plus the fact that it was 8ft below, the supplied pump did not have enough pressure to push down, through the coil, and back up again, by that time the presure had dropped so low, the pressure switch would not activate----The solution, A LARGER MORE POWERFUL PUMP, we will install the new pump tomorrow, and hopefully, start making heat, Gene

Re: Guess What This Is Doing
Just a couple of question G...why is the copper plumbing tied into the blk. iron fittings? Why isn't the water heater raised 18" off of the floor? No drain pan? NO check valves installed into the system? Where's the p/r valve? Pipe insulation around the copper (type L) of course. Inquiring minds want to know.

Re: Guess What This Is Doing
G-While I do respect your answers to my questions I also question the longevity of the copper connected to the black iron fittings bring corrosive issues in the future. I've never connected the to different materials together for water supply lines. Going back and looking at the picture I think that I see the spring check valve installed between the blk. iron and copper just above the 3/4" elbow.
I install brass nipples/fittings when making any connections between copper(more expensive) of course. Where's James,Ron the plumber, toilet killer with their more knowledgeable experience. |

Re: Guess What This Is Doing
Electrolysis can and will occur unless a dielectric union is used or a brass nipple...tee....90....Brass needs to be inbetween the copper and steel. I have seen black pipe used sucessfully like that in oil systems. I would never do that with potable water. That said on verticle runs it won't be an issue for many years, for horizontal pipe it is a service call in the making.
