Getting An Odd Surge

K, guys please don't fry me too bad. I am not a plumber just a lowly carpenter with a plumbing question. I have a well and am all of a sudden getting a very odd and distinct surge in my water pressure. It happens in all fixtures even the hose. I can hear the pump clicking on and off on and off. Would this be due to a failing pressure switch? or is there another possabilty? Thanks for the help guys.

Your pressure tank is probably shot.

I agree Pressure tank. You can check this out by going to the tank and at the top is a air valve. First i would take a small screw driver and push it down and see if any water comes out. If it does it is bad. the 2nd thing i would do is to check the pressure on the tank with a tire gauge. The pressure should be 2psi less than than the cut on pressure. Example(if you have a 40-60 pressure switch the pressure should be 38psi in the tank)

Also check your check valve and foot valve in the well. Stuck or held open by debris will allow the water to fall back into the well causing short cycles.

Caution: Advice from another lowly carpenter on a well.

Good Luck
