Gas Water Heater With Timer On It?

There was a thread a while back about putting a timer on a gas water heater. Apparently no one had done it. Or thought it was a good idea. While visiting my brother he had a friend over who told me how he did it. He took the 24 volt gas valve out of a forced exhaust heater (junked) and put that in the burner line on his standard heater. He then hooked that to a transformer from a furnace and hooked the transformer to a plug in timer. Shuts off the burner from 9PM until 7AM. Cute! Says it saves him about fifteen bucks a month on his gas bill. Also says it cost about thirty bucks to put together with a handybox and some thermostat wire. Not sure I would do this for a customer, try explaining it to an inspector...
