Gas Smell

I have a rental house that recently had to have the main line eeled out. It didn't work so then they had to use water jet. There is a y right next to the main line where it goes into the ground. The Y is open. I'm not sure if there was something stuck in the Y. before the clog problem. Anyhow, I put 10 bags of lime on the sewage in the crawl. That is what the plumbing company said to do to neutralize the sewage there. I honestly don't smell anything when I am in the crawl. However, there is a strong gas smell that is in the bathroom right above where the pipe is. Could it be that someone had something shoved in the pipe and now that it isn't there that is where the smell is coming from?
Thanks in advance. ps I am plumbing stupid

Re: Gas Smell

Do you have water in the trap? If dry, that's where the smell is comming from. I have to occasionally dump a gallon of water in some of my shop floor drains during the winter for the same reason.

Re: Gas Smell

At Mom's house I discovered the 3" ABS line was never glued to the closet flange.
It was also not strapped to the floor joists, so when the pipe was
filled with water it came apart.
There was a 2" gap between the flange and pipe.
Every time the toilet was flushed, some of the waste missed the pipe and spilled out.
2 different plumbing crews were hired to fix it.
They said there was nothing wrong and the vents were causing the smell.
Charged their fees and took off.
I went in through the crawl space and flood, found the problem.
Pulled the toilet, cut out the floor and rebuilt the waste line and closet flange from there.
No more sewer smell.

Re: Gas Smell

Like I said, I know nothing about plumbing. There is just a y right where it goes into the ground. It is a crawl so there is only about 3 feet between the subfloor and the dirt. Pipe is a straight shot from the subfloor to where it goes down under ground. I guess it could be from the sewage that I have covered up with lime. Is that a common practice to clean up sewage? Lime? The plumber assured me to cover up with lime and would not smell. I really don't smell it when in the crawl.

Railmans question would be my first question too. The trap is there to prevent sewer gas from coming up through the fixtures. The water in the trap creates the seal. If your trap is dry, you will have quite the odor.

Dump some water down the drain and check the smell in a day or so.
