Garbage Disposal Problem

Installed garbage disposal 3 months ago and discovered it was leaking last week end. When I reached in to swipe for leaks, one of the mounting bolts fell in my hand; the other 2 were loose and heading south.

I've installed plenty of gd's and have never experience this. I bought it from ACE and it appears to be of good quality. Could vibration have loosened those bolts?

Regards, Bob

Re: Garbage Disposal Problem

ACE, not sure who makes their gd's. Can't figure it, I tightened the mounting ring bolts as you would expect: plenty of putty ooze, securely tight and it was fine for 3 months. I removed the unit, re-tightened the bolts and everything is fine for now. I've just never seen this before.

Re: Garbage Disposal Problem

Ace is not popular with plumbers, get and install an ISE brand.

Re: Garbage Disposal Problem

Ace uses (is made by?) the ISE mounting ring.

I suspect this was caused by too much putty and not enough time tightening the mount. When the putty starts to ooze, you need to tighten the screws and let it ooze some more. Repeat as needed. You know you have it tight enough once you get no more significant putty ooze.

What happens is the ring is tightened to the putty and not the sink, so the flange is free to move, once the putty relaxes some more under the flange, the screws are loose and will vibrate out. Check them again in a day or so and give them a tweek or two. Recheck once more and that should do it.

Once the flange comes in contact with the sink, it can't compress the putty anymore and any movement is transfered to the sink, not the flange, so the screws will then stay tight.

We might have to start calling you Bob14-1, instead of Bob14-0.

Re: Garbage Disposal Problem

I've installed the Ace disposals, if I remember correctly the fine print states that they are made by ISE.

Excellent! Thanks all for the very helpful posts - great forum. The guy (friend) at ACE, who sold me the GD, used to work for a large plumbing outfit and he always shoots me straight, so I figured the "ACE" brand was OK.

Again, thanks
