Fixtures From B-Box/internet

First off want to say I'm not a contractor, but a home owner, in case that discourages you from reading further.

I have read on a variety of posts about purchasing plumbing fixtures from the Big Box stores and how they are crap. My question is, if I purchase a (for example) Kohler Fairfax faucet from Blue or the internet, or I have a plumber get it from his wholesaler, it's the same faucet right?

I realize that by my purchasing the product, you as a plumber won't warranty the fixture. But as price goes, I'll be getting the fixtures for sometimes far less then what you charge for it.

I also realize that part of what the mark-up is for you is covering the potenial cost of coming out to warranty work.

All in all, I can't figure out what the big deal is between the homeowner buying a fixture and you guys. Please understand I'm not trying to start a flame war here, but would like some honest thoughts on this.

Re: Fixtures From B-Box/internet

If we buy it, we mark it up to cover our time and travel to pick it up, among other things. It's also our responsibility to cover warranty issues with the part. If you buy it, it's on you if it breaks or has warranty issues. Most of the time it ends up costing you the same or more in labor when you buy it because it's either wrong or it's not there when we need it. We do have a small percentage of customers buying their own fixtures that actually get it right the first time though....
