Re: Drain Pipe Holes Up Or Down?

For the most part holes down, although sometimes I'll rotate the pipe a little clockwise.

Holes down to collect water.

No holes to carry it away.

One hole at the end to let out the water.

Re: Drain Pipe Holes Up Or Down?

It's a perimeter drain, it's there to pick up water around the building and get rid of it, so... holes down. Rain leaders here have to be in a different pipe, with no holes. (Except at the ends )

Holes down, and if you are also running rain drainage (gutters and downspouts) always run in a separate pipe with no holes.
Never tie the two together. Never.

As soon as you're away (downstream) from the building you can tie them together in solid pipe.

I would tend to disagree with tying them together for the following reason.

In the event that the drain gets clogged for whatever reason downstream of were the join, the water from the rain drains will flow back up to the foundation drain and possibly cause flooding of the basement. All it would take is some animal to decide the pipe is a cozy place to start a family, or the pipe is collapsed somehow...then the next thunder storm causes a backup.

We always run parallel pipes, keeping them separate, the trench is already there and the added expense of the additional pipe is cheap insurance.
