Disposal In Double Sink

What can be done to keep the diposal from pushing water and crude over to the other bowl of the sink?

Make sure the drain isn't partially plugged up past where they meet, that's a common cause. If the drain isn't plugged use a separate trap, if there isn't two already, one for each side of the sink.

Make sure you use a baffled tee on the continuous waste so it diverts in downward.

Check codes on this, here UPC does not allow double trapping.

I once saw someone installed the baffle tee upside down, what a show.

Re: Disposal In Double Sink

I currently have a baffled t and it is not working. Or at least not as well as I would like. When running the disposal on one side, there is backwah into the other sink that leaves an underisable residue.

Had not thought of installing a double trap. Would it be ok then to come out of the wall with a y and then transition to two separate traps? Also what about solvent weld PVC vs. the compresion stuff?

Oh and to make matters worse, it appears the wall was originally plumbed with 1 1/2" PVC, but now there is a 1 1/4" PVC reducer and it is barely below the bottom of the dispoal outlet....

Re: Disposal In Double Sink

The only time I have seen this happen is when there was some type of restriction in the drain. I would have the pipes in the wall cleaned as a start.

That is the problem.

Excellent point, I don't think any code allows double trapping, although I have seen towns that require a separate trap for disposals and instructions (for a disposal) that specify a separate trap. I though it was a given that you would have to run the new trap back to the wall. I prefer 2 seperate traps because they drain a lot faster without the baffle/diverter.

I agree that it's most likely a blockage down the line, that's the first thing to check, but I have also seen where the dishwasher drain is pumped in at a pretty good pressure, where the drains meet it's up high (close to sink bowl), and that has caused some backwash.

Depending on how low the drain at the wall or where ever the drain exits you might be able to lower the point where the drains meet to prevent the backwash, I'd go back to 1-1/2" pipe if you're going to do any work.

I hate those things, as soon as I see them, I throw them out. They are the biggest cause of back ups with clean pipes.

That said, Ron gave you the answer in that your 1 1/2" line is in need of a cleaning. Water takes the path of least resistance, hence gravity does the work, if your blocked up than it will back up. Double trapping is cheezy IMO and unnecessary. If a particular city requires it, OK, whatever, but if the drain is the right size, vented properly, and clean, you ought not have any problems.
