Customer Has A Tiled Shower Pan Leak

The pan is 4-5 years old, not sure of its construction ,lead, vinyl liner or what. But what i can deduct from the evidence is the white flaky stuff hanging from the drain underneath is from cement sitting in water dripping down for a while. I'm sure there's a word for it, but i don't know it.
Where its coming from is a bit of a mystery unfortunately until its removed.

Either the the liner has failed or has been installed incorrectly. There is a possibility the drain may be cracked or damaged, but from the available vantage point its difficult to say.

It looks like it has an older styled drain ,may be weeped but i don't recognize it. Anyone recognize this drain style ? 4x6 alcove shower with 12x12 marble, not a cheap fix, probably can't match the marble so the whole shower will probably have to be redone.

And people wonder how a tiny drip can turn into a few thousand dollars.

Looks like a regular adjustable PVC drain to me, though I wonder about the hole in the side of the thread for the grate.

I don't know, - - is it one of those 'double-acting' drains??

if the pan has to be redone, one cheaper option is to rip out the floor, and 1 or 2 courses up around the base, change pan, then tile with a similar or complimentary tile, its one way to save the walls.

Re: Customer Has A Tiled Shower Pan Leak

The mystery deepens. When i first looked at it ,those holes looked like some kind of weep holes leading from the cement base back into the drain, but wouldn't make sense with water running into them while taking a shower.

But come to think of it there was a strange residue around them holes, similar to the reisidue that was on the drain below. Adjustable drain, maxed out too much, therefore exposing some cement ? Either way the drain or the pan is leaking. What a mess .

Yea , the customer must already have an idea of the marble cost for a complete replacement, he just emailed me and ask if we could just replace one course up, which is a real pain in the azz sometimes. I've done some before where i've cut the tile in half then peeled the other peice off without damaging the backer board, but sometimes if there glued real well there hard to peel off with out causing more damage. I like to be left with a seam on the backer board i can seal up properly.
