Curse Of The Poop Demon!
Ok guys, need some help. Ive asked my plumber friends and they dont have an answer. Bought this house a year ago. the basement/in law is finished with a roughed in kitchen. It has a full bath the very rarely gets used. My basement freakin stinks. Its like the septic tank is just sitting in the middle of my basement with the lid off , thats how bad and strong is smells sometimes. I capped off all the waste lines in the kitchen. The tank is within 10 feet of the house and very close the the basement bathroom, is this the problem? Also once in a while it stinks outside also. I flush the toilet down there when I can and run some water but nothing helps. Any suggestions. thanks

Re: Curse Of The Poop Demon!
There is really no way to answer this without seeing the actual house, or without very detailed pics, the problem could be coming from any number of places, including a rotted vent pipe from the floor above.

Re: Curse Of The Poop Demon!
Things that could cause that:
1. dry traps in any of the fixtures 2. lack of proper trapping in any of the fixtures 3. lack of proper vents or blocked vents causing siphoning of trap water 4. leaking seal between commode and flange 5. leaking pipes under the slab. 6. leaking pipes outside the basement wall or leaking septic tank or a poorly located drain field allowing sewage (liquid) to permiate the foundation walls. 7. same things as above but entering a foundation drain pit through the foundation drain system. |

Re: Curse Of The Poop Demon!
One thing I can say is alot of times it smells more concentrated the closer I get to the toilet. But that wouldnt explain the smell outside, right? I guess I need to find someone who knows what the hell they are doing.

Re: Curse Of The Poop Demon!
If it were hooked up to a sewer line, I would say to check to see that the perimeter drain isn't plumbed to the sanitary sewer without a trap and the smell is backing up into the foundation drain lines and it stinks everywhere.
By the way, I have a house with a lot of window wells in the basement and these each have a perimeter drain inlet in them. There was a superdooperautobahnfreeway of cold air coming into my sump pit, which I promptly stuffed full of rags. Hope I remember to remove that come spring. |

Re: Curse Of The Poop Demon!
It has been said already check for a dry trap alot of times if there is a floor drain in the basement that never gets used the water will evap and let some gas back threw.
I like the drywaller comment look for a sheetrock box over in the corner |

Re: Curse Of The Poop Demon!
Run water in it every week or so. "Evaporated Trap Syndrome".
Or: The down force from above, flushed toilet, etc., may be causing enough pressure to push gasses up through the full tub trap. (Inadequate venting)

Re: Curse Of The Poop Demon!
Checked for evidence of current or past sheetrock guys in the house...nothing! So over the past week the outside has really stunk. I mean when you walk outside its like you are walking throught the local prison getting poo thrown at you. Is my tank leaking? Its like when it smells inside it doesnt outside and vice versa.
