Question

CPVC Bending Radius

Hi guys,

I know it isn't practical to always match 45's and 90's to irregular framing patterns - but what is the max radius or bend in 1/2" cpvc?

Re: CPVC Bending Radius

There is no provision in model codes for field bending of CPVC pipe.

Re: CPVC Bending Radius

According to FlowGuard Gold® Installation Technical Manual.

Do not bend FlowGuard Gold 1/2" and 3/ 4" pipe in a bend tighter than an 18" radius; 1" pipe
should not be bent in a radius tighter than 24"

Re: CPVC Bending Radius

Okay I understand the pitfalls of cpvc in certain climates - that wasn't the issue. In FL we can't use copper or galv because of the water quality and people are scared of anything that comes in a roll after the quest debacle. Thanks for my answer Ron.

Re: CPVC Bending Radius

CPVC has been code approved for limited use here in Arkansas for a few years now, but you have a very hard time finding fittings for it. We don't have the water quality issues.

We do have some very agressive soils in certain areas however, and metal in the ground becomes useless in short order in those areas. I just will not put a glued joint that is under pressure in a home. Ever.

Out in the yard, no problem.

Re: CPVC Bending Radius

CPVC bad....don't EVER dryfit the stuff together, it will hold water tight to 65psi, in the right situation, without glue. Don't ask how I know this.

Re: CPVC Bending Radius

The problem with a glue joint is that it is really not a glue at all, its a solvent weld. If the product is defective, even just a little bit so, the weld can be inferior and not show up for years even.

Now, outside, it can cause damage, but usually not catastrophe. Inside, it can ruin a building depending on how long it goes undetected. That is why I won't use a 'glue joint' inside a building unless its on an unpressurized drain.

Re: CPVC Bending Radius

My whole house uses CPVC and I'm told it's because of the water quality. Every other newer house I have seen around here also uses CPVC regardless of whether they are on public water or well. Am I to expect that I'll come home one day to a flooded house or is this just a few plumbers un-easy about something new?

Re: CPVC Bending Radius

I always use CPVC and have for the last 15 years. Never had a problem yet! Well except "the dry fit thing."
It seems it`s east to forget witch joints are glued some times... don't ask I`m not saying anything...lmao

I just replumbed my old 2 story house with CPVC last year. I would never use copper on a line I might get a drink of water out of.

Re: CPVC Bending Radius

The problem with cpvc is the taste in the water, nothing better then tasting plastic

Re: CPVC Bending Radius

Isn't CPVC permeable? I get a sheet of paper with every order that lists alot of common items that cannot come in contact with CPVC. That alone is enough for me to discourage use of it for drinking water.

Rob, my problem is not with it being 'new' as its not really all that new. My problem is not liking the systems in place for joining the pipe.

I just think there are better materials and methods of joining them than CPVC.

Just what problems have you seen with CPVC? And what do you think caused the problems? Like I said before I`v used it for many years and never to this day had a leak or any other problem. Is there something I should be looking out for?

I will continue to use cpvc in all my custom homes and my own properties. Enough beating this dead horse.
