Code Logic Question

What is the logic behind the plumbing code in regard to minimum drain sizing between tubs and showers?

1 1/2 for tubs and 2 inch for showers? Logically to me it almost seems it should be the other way around.

Re: Code Logic Question

The logic behind it is called flood level threshold, since the shower has a lower flood level threshold, you would want a 2" drain, where as a tubs flood threshold is allot higher, so 1-1/2" is good enough.

Hope that makes sense.

Re: Code Logic Question

You're talking about having a bigger drain on a shower pan to avoid it filling with water?

That's the idea behind this?

Re: Code Logic Question

Another logical answer would be all your shower drains are 2" and decreasing on the outlet side of the a drain is against code.

Re: Code Logic Question

A shower receptor has little storage capacity, and therefore needs to drain as quickly as possible, a bathtub need not drain as quickly because it has a hundred times more storage.

Re: Code Logic Question

OK, tubs have overflows, Lavs have overflows, shower's don't have overflows, and kitchen sinks don't have overflows. Was the question about logic?
