Closet Flange/lead Pipe

Was running a new coax cable for the computer and noticed that the ground was damp under the toilet. It is leaking above the bottom of the floor, but not on the bathroom floor. Am guessing this could still be a wax ring leak. Have always had them leak on the floor, but never just underneath. Also am wondering how the closet flange mates to the 4" lead pipe to it. Never had any reason to mess with them.

Re: Closet Flange/lead Pipe

I have replaced quite a few subfloors for water damage and most are the wax ring, also closet flange heigth being wrong
If the waste line is cast iron the flange is sealed with okum and lead.
That can be cleaned out and a caulk type of "lead"sealer used.
Pull toilet and check.
My bet will be the wax ring.

Re: Closet Flange/lead Pipe

This has about a foot long 4" lead pipe going from a cast iron T to the flange. Getting in the get the old pipe out and cleaning out the oakum I would think would be a problem since you wouldn't have much room to work in between the joists and the nails through the flooring. I'm hoping that it is the wax ring, but was concerned since it was only leaking underneath. Have another bathroom that I can use in the meantime so I guess I'll try the wax ring and cross my fingers.

Be careful around those old lead bends unless you plan on replacing it.

Most of those bends were custom made on site, replacement can and will be quite hard.

I think that some one came out with a replacement rubber bend for these however you need to have a good piece to work with.

No bends in it, just a straight shot up. The T is in between the PVC leg coming up from the main house drain line and the lead pipe. The 2" drain line from the bathroom sink is coming into the side of the T. At least one thing is going my way on this.
