Question

Blocked Diverter?

Hey guys,
This post is a little long.
my neighbor asked me to help him install a toilet in his downstairs powder room. I say sure not a problem. When I turn off the water for the toilet the shut off starts to leak(very old), so I ask where the main shut off is to the house while we work on the toilet. We look all around and can not find the shut-off. I think it was closed in a wall when some one remodeled the basement. We turn a few other valves hoping to stop the water to the powder room but never succeeded. No big deal as the original problem was a few drops and was solved with a rag under the valve. Everything went well except for when I went to turn the shut-off valve on. I tweaked for a few minutes and got it to stop leaking. He thanks me and I go home across the street. He calls about 20 minutes later and says his upstairs shower only has a trickle of hot and very low cold water flow(shower head AND tub spout). I get there and he says one of his double sinks has a trickle too. He said his wife turned on the shower and no water, then checked one of the sinks and no water. I suspected a clog and took apart the sink filter and sure enough there was a bunch of rubber bits. I cleaned it out and the sink works fine. The shower still does not work. I suspect that when we turned the valves in the basement the rubber washers inside were old and just shedded off wth us turning them. But if that were the case it would not get caught in the diverter would it? I would suspect it pass out the spout. The house is less than 30 yrs old all copper. I was thinking of getting one of those sink snakes and poking up at the diverter if there was some thing. What do you guys think this might be?

It sounds like its in the shower valve its self , you may have to take it apart and clean it out ,but first remove the shower head and open the valve and flush it out that way, please post and let us know how you made out .

Re: Blocked Diverter?

Well I talked to my neighbor yesterday and he had a plumber look at it. There was a bunch of debris clogging the valve. There was a bunch of rubber and he said they found a big wood chip too. That was weird! Thanks for looking out tzzzz.
