Best Water Softener

My old water softener is on its last legs and is due for replacement. Which is the best unit at a reasonable price?

Are you on a septic system? If you are, there are special considerations when using a water softener.

Its my understanding the first thing you want to do is call your local water company and ask how hard your water is. This will then tell you the correct water softner to purchase. I asked my plumber the exact question your asking. He said our water is really hard so i would need a unit that is at least so and so. I forgot the so and so.

I'm on septic tank/drainfield. I forgot about the hardness issue, I'll have to get it tested again.

Re: Best Water Softener

There have been tests done that showed some water softeners that use potassium chloride rather than sodium chloride could have a weakening effect on the septic bacteria. The drainfield's soil permeability can become degraded reducing it's ability to absorb waste water. The newer units are much more efficient with on demand functions rather than timer controls. I wouldn't be surprised if they have computers built into them in the not too distant future!

They do make them. I seen rich T on ask this old house install one. It was so smart it would know if the city change something in the water and automatically ajust the water accordingly. But that unit wasn't cheap total installation cost he said 1750. Wow.
