Back then all you needed was a bucket and rope for water at the well. A shovel , lumber, and some nails for the Out house.

Seriously, one of the old favorites was a panel truck. Plumbers didn't carry the bulk of tools and parts that they do now. They made their own tool boxes. Back before copper use became common, a threader and some pipe wrenches pretty much did the trick.
