American Standard Whirlpool Pump Bad?

Hi all,
This is a great forum. I have lurked here for a while and read some very good advice. Thank you!

I have a question about an American Standard Whirlpool tub I just installed. I am a DIY'er but am pretty capable of doing most plumbing chores. I purchased the tub in April of 2005 but I just installed it. The basement I am finishing took longer than I thought. Anyway, I just installed it and tested every thing. There are no leaks and the pump turns on. However, the pump will pump water with very good volume for about a minute and then water volume will drop off, then pick back up and then drop off. I thought at first it might be a voltage drop problem but I connected it to a dedicated circuit and used #12 three wire connected to a GFI breaker (not GFI receptacle). The breaker is about 20' away. I do have a separate heater connected inline but it also is fed from a dedicated circuit. Has anyone experienced this type of problem before? I haven't finished the hardibacker yet so it's not too late to remove it although it would be a pain. Any insight would be helpful.
Thanks
R

ps I looked but found nothing on the American Standard website that I could find to diagnose the problem.

Is there a chance that it is designed to do that, in order to give the user a massaging sensation?

t,
That's a very good and valid question. The installation instructions included with the tub don't specify this type of pump action. I will have to call the manufacturer tomorrow to get some technical help. I will ask that question when I call.
