Allowed Sewer Pipe Material

In Jefferson county Alabama you are only allowed to use c-900 (I don't know a single plumbing company that uses it) or ductile iron sewer pipe. We all assume this has everything to do somehow with the U. S. Pipe factory located in the heart of the county which manufactures, you guessed it, ductile iron pipe.

Is anyone else required to use this pipe for sewer replacement or anything else out of the ordinary? Just wondering.

All sewers in the City of Chicago must be vitrified clay pipe, and must be layed by someone possessing a drainlayer's license.

BTW, you do know that U.S. Pipe and Foundry used to be a major player in the cast iron soil pipe business right? They switched to concentrating on ductile water main in the late eighties because they did not want to invest in the tooling to produce No Hub pipe and fittings.

Because it's crushable?
Or because the joints
are easily penetrated?

It keeps the City of Chicago dept of sewers busy is the only reason I have found, if it is a break past the sidewalk it is the cities problem.

Re: Allowed Sewer Pipe Material

PVC is allowed in most places in the state, but some places, like the cities of North Little Rock and Little Rock require it to be schedule 40 pipe with schedule 80 fittings bedded in 30" of sand and covered with 30" of sand before backfilling or cast iron. Cast is what is used.

Ductile is required under asphalt or concrete drives/roads.
