Cost of materials as a percentage of revenue

Hi Guys,

Just wondering if any of you guys can give me an idea of what your materials costs are as a percentage of revenue?

I'm just trying to compare my company against others. I think we have a lot of inefficiencies like waste and theft. When you reply, could you specify if it is residential or commercial work, and for different scenarios? General numbers are good too.

Also, any idea on how to cut down on materials costs would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Bjorn

you question is worded weird, but of my gross income, I spend about 35 - 45 % on materials. Its depends totally on the year though. This year I did a bunch of customs where I charged like 4 times my normal labor costs but materials were the same so. Does that answer your question?

I've actually lost money on jobs I've underbid before.

Always have a profit.

Do no favours, you'll only wind up working for 14 hours/day for an 8/hour day wage.

I learned this garbage the hard way. *Sigh.*

just an example but close to real world costs.

this is turn-key per sheet prices for level 3 textured work, comm. or res.
on 1/2 inch rock. for Florida

Labor: Hang, Finish, Spray .. roughly $13-$15

Materials: Rock, ....around $8
nails, screws, bead mud, tape...... around $3-$4 per sheet

so its real close to 45/55
55 to the labor

Are you saying that you're contracting jobs for $25 - $27 per 4x12 board?
