My Version Of Land Clearing

Farmer I was helping with field work , rented an excavator and having me clear out a single tire tree belt.

Most were dead, thinks aerial sprayers got them

Most tree belts here are like 8-10 rows wide

There are a lot of single row ones in fields around here. Think it was a government program at one time.

yeah, soil conservation program after the 30's..

in today's world with 60' tillage equipment, 90' planters, and 42' wide combines, all gps'd...those single tree rows make it difficult.

Re: My Version Of Land Clearing

What the heck kills full grown trees? That is scary as this spring there will be crops for our tables planted there. Organic food is looking more an more affordable vs death.

We ripped out cherry orchards before, but just used a D6. Ripped twice on one side, then pushed them over. Built a pile and burned in the winter.

In the Midwest Roosevelt requested trees be planted to stop the Dust Bowl from continuing. It worked!

Ditto on what was the aerial spray deadly enough to kill those trees, wouldn't want to be downwind of that.

At least they’re not spreading PFAS/PFOS rich tannery sludge on the fields like they did here up until a few years back. Contaminated everyone’s wells.

Re: My Version Of Land Clearing

Interesting day, about 10 this am, this red tundra comes flying across the field, bear in mind, this is a disked cornfield. Not a smooth ride.

Guy starts screaming, where the f is my tree stand? Told him I get there before sun up and didn't see one. Asks who the f is going to pay for it. Then goes on about paying to hunt and have his property busted up.

I tell him, let me make a call. Get ahold of friends son, tell him there's a guy here pissed off about a tree stand I never saw, nor had knowledge was there.

He goes, I'll be right over. For about 15 minutes I had to listen to this guy rant about paying good money to hunt only to have his tree stand destroyed, and how he was gong to demand his lease money back, plus price of new stand.

Friends son pulls up, introduces himself to the tundra guy, tundra guy goes, who the f are you? Friends son goes, uh I own this property,

Tundra guy goes, no you don't, john doe does. Friends son goes, uh he owns the section across the road, you're trespassing.

Tundra guy is in phone and finds out indeed, he's on wrong property.

I'm sure what followed wouldn't have happened if he hadn't been such a jerk.

Friends son goes, $100, and I don't call the sheriff and tell him you've been trespassing, hunting on posted land.

Amazing, tundra guy just happened to have a c note in his wallet.

This is what a half a mile of ash trees look like in a hole.

First calm night, we're gonna make schmores.

Maybe the Emerald Ash Borer got them, not pesticide.

The bark would be falling off of them as they chew the heck out of the cambium.

Dayexco, was the bark falling off the trees? What kind of trees are they? I can ask my sister what she thinks. (She is an invasive species specialist, for horticulture.)

Ash trees are damn near gone here, they look perfectly normal until you poke at the bark and it peels off like a twizzler. Got a massive one on my parents property that would make a nice harvest table.
