Steel Beam

I need to get a steel beam to span 35' and it will have two other steel beams coming off of it spanning 12' each perpendicular to the larger beam, they will be placed at 1/3 and 2/3 of the length in order to support a roof with it. It will be a light roof and not needing to support a lot but I do need it to span this without drooping at all. Please let me know. I know that normally I would get an engineer to step in on this but it is just for a porch coming off of a garage.

Re: Steel Beam

How much will an engineer charge you to spec this structure? No one is going to give you a spec on a forum for a potential lawsuit.

Re: Steel Beam

Go go a local Fab Shop. They should be able to help you out. They might have a licensed PE or have one that does work for them. This beam will have to have gussets and stiffiners applied. The weight of the beam is going to be heavy enough, add in the roof line over 35' and she's going to be heavy. I would not try this build without a sign off of a PE on the drawing.

I am referring to there will be no plywood, no underlayment, and it will be corrugated steel (like on an old barn) so yes I know it sounds funny but it is a light roof.
