New Trailer Toungue Setup

I currently own this compressor, 210 CFM Sullivan Palatek
http://sulvan.thomasnet.com/Asset/D185-250QJD.jpg

I have a 420 LBS. Blasting Pot that I want to mount on the toungue of this trailer. Similar to this setup.

http://www.universalminerals.com/ima...da_blaster.jpg

That setup has roughly 406 LBS on that plate.

What that company did was to remove the existing toungue from the trailer and fabricate a new piece with a platform with diamond plate on top. They extended the toungue by an additional 4ft. Removal is easy, just a few bolts.

Accorind to the compressors website, it weighs around 2600 LBS, not sure if its the total setup or engine alone, im pretty sure its the total setup though.

This single axle trailer is rated at 3500, im not sure how axles are rated but, does it mean 3500 lbs of dead weight on the axle? Does it take into account weight distribution?

I want to fabricate this similar setup to mount my pot on. I know it can be done and how, but the real question is, can the trailer handle the addional weight? 420 LBS pot, plus the weight of the additional toungue length. Guy from the company said total weight should be 3600lbs. 1000 lbs over stock, seems a bit high doesnt it?

thanks!

Aren't you afraid the thing will get too heavy for the carriage? Won't the tongue weight be a problem? My little "100 lb pot" weighs a good 75 lbs, with a load of sand and 100' of hose, around 250. I'd put the pot apparatus on a second single-axle trailer, tuned for correct tongue weight, with storage for hood, hoses, extra media, etc. Seems a lot more practical to me. I don't really have any credentials to offer, but I've done a whole lot of work with similar tools and trying to achieve portability. I'm afraid you're gonna bend or bust the trailer frame.

A lot of the weight your going to add will go on the truck. Not all of it will be on the trailer.

Looks like the compressor is almost balanced on the trailer. Just be sure the truck will handle the extra tongue wt.

My Truck is a 06 2500 Ram Turbo Diesel 8ft bed, quad cab.

I think its rated 12k tow, im pretty sure it can handle the extra weight at the tongue.

With all this modification to the trailer, do you think it can handle the extra weight?

I also thought about upgrading the existing axle or even adding a 2nd if possible?

Portability is my main goal.

Toungue setup

The weight distribution is for a center balance of the load using the 60/40 rule, as you are front loading over the toungue it will lower the weight being added to the trailer, most trailers are built using the rule 60/40....60% of your length in front of your axle (or center hanger if you are doing a tandem) and 40% behind. So if you have got a 10' long trailer, you will be 1" for every foot of length, ie.. 10". This is to keep the load on the toungue enough it does not come off while pulling.

You may want to look into the "easy" fix for extra loading, reinforce the frame, and increese the axle rating. (then you have another axle to play with in making another trailer )

Btw... I use to build all types of trailers for a living, Cargo/Cattle/DW/ and drop frame, just to name a few. Loved the work, but you can get ran out of biz real quick by the big name builders, they undercut me to death.

I never realized this until today, the compressor isnt on a trailer. The axle is directly on the frame. Axles brackets are welded directly to the frame. Same goes with the tounge, welded to the frame.

Can we do some sort of modification and make something?

Trailer changes

It is still a trailer, same rules apply.

You would reinforce the welding on the tongue when you install the new axle, when you change the axle you just cut it off and weld the higher rated axle on to the frame.

Lot of trailers are built that way, it saves time and money.

The initail wt is 2600.
Your going to add 420 lbs for the pot.
Then if you used 4x4x3/8" square steel tubing 10' long (probably wouldn't need to be that long) for the tongue that would add 170 lbs to the total.
Total wt would be 3190. I'm sure it would be a little more due to bracing and support for the pot so lets stay it would end up weighing 3500 lbs.

If you put any of that wt on the truck, say 600 lbs (which is the max tongue wt for a reese type hitch for a standard pickup). That leaves only 3000 lbs on the axle, which is within the rating for it.

I would not change the axle for this application. You may not even need to add length to the tongue just reinforce it if need be.
