Re: Work Letter
Yes personally I do think it would be inappropriate...I have a my space page too, but it is for pleasure (to communicate with my kids). Linkedin is much more professional, for people in business keeping in touch. But why direct them there? what is there that isn't on your resume?

Re: Work Letter
I think that using MySpace in a professional application is inappropriate. It is a website for teens and young adults to socially network, if thats what you want to call it.
If you have a company or service, I'd suggest having a website built and hosted to advertise your product in a professional manner. Imagine someone at a GC firm opening your MySpace page and getting disciplined (or the site blocked) for inappropriate use of the company's computers!

Re: Work Letter
I think if you are sending a letter that you should be in-depth. Give the people a reason to review your letter and keep it on file rather than throwing it away.
First you should try and find out who you should address it to instead of sending it in general mail. Second, I would consider sending a Capability Statement. This type of document looks to answer similar questions a Request For Qualifications (RFQ) would ask. If you plan to bid large job, organizations, and or municipalities you would need this information anyways. I would search the internet for examples or visit a site like docstoc which is a depository of documents that you can review and download for free. Lastly, I would tell you to get a professional website done. My niece works at a company that may be able to help: Mac Advertising & Design out of Dallas, TX |

Re: Work LetterQuote:
Include a separate page with references of work you already did and a person contact number so they can check if they wish. Doing this way will have a nice and professional appearance. Good luck

Re: Work LetterQuote:
I have thought about this a lot. Seems easier to have a page on myspace than to go full bore with web site. I'm just a mason, with a helper, mostly residential but a little bit of everything. Not sure I want a web site that needs maintenance. I think the other responses answer my question, (about having a myspace link for a web page) but how do you like it? Do you think it is accomplishing anything? Obviously its easy to set up and control, but the cherry popping comment isn't exactly professional if you know what I mean.

Re: Work Letter
I think Greg and Jomar are correct.
It isn't that hard to figure out who to send it to, if you're not sending out a ton of letters. If you are mass mailing without contact information you may want to send it to their estimating department. I imagine most GCs have a team of drywallers they typically request bids from. The previous jobs and references is a must. Give them a reason to risk their project on you and your team. We really haven't had a problem calling the GC and asking what it takes to get on the bid list. Most of the guys are great and will tell you straight up. Some have them own forms they require you to fill out. Good luck. I do think this is a good time to network and market your company. |
