What's Holding Up The Drywall???
My knowledge is a lot lacking in the commercial construction area, so this has me stumped.
I was attempting to re-secure a cantilevered countertop to the wall in our local welfare office. I notice 18 bazillion drywall anchors pulled out of the drywall. Of course, I'm wondering why no one just screwed into the studs. Oh...because there aren't any! I cut a 3' wide notch horizontally across the wall to see what's in there. There is only drywall laid over 1-1/2" of foam board over block walls. This counter is near a wall corner, so I cut an opening in that...no wood, no metal, just block. ![]() So how is the drywall being held up? I'm thinking of cutting out a relief in the drywall/foam sandwich and wedge anchoring a ledger board to the block so I can attach this counter. Any better ideas?

Re: What's Holding Up The Drywall???
I don't know if they have this system in the US but british gypsum had a system that sounds like what your talking about. My Uncle had some office partitions done by a company and I'm 99% sure it was a british gypsum wall system and it also had a foam center. But it was double sided and not just single.
This is all i can find that looks like what he had but his was double sided. ![]()

Re: What's Holding Up The Drywall???
Sounds logical.
Doesn't make it real easy to hang shelves though.

The foam may be held in place by Z furring installed horizontally. Installing horizontal framing members helps when standing up your sheets of drywall.
