What Is This Discharge?

Hey guys. Quick question for any professionals out there.

I'm a monitor on a large residential construction job. Recently we've had some odd, white substance coming out of our drainage pipes, leading into a creek we're building over. We have 3 different contract crews on this job and no one has any idea what it is. When in water, it has chunks, when the water has soaked into the ground, it leaves a Crisco (the shortening) like consistency. I've attached a photo of it coming out of the pipe, as well as one in the pipe. (We are trying to hold it in the pipe to keep it out of the creek) I've stated I believe it's cement washout, but others disagree.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Doesn't look like concrete washout.

Take a chunk to a lab and have it identified.

That is the normal course of action in a issue like this.

Looks like drywall mud to me, too.

What's on the inlet side - do you have a picture of that? Is it there all the time, or just sporadically? Any noticeable smell associated with it?

Just curious questions. What you should do, if this is a legitimate concern for you/your bosses, is what Griz said - get it tested.

Are they using pump trucks for the concrete? Maybe it's a primer for the truck such as slick-pac.

Re: What Is This Discharge?

depending on the area you'd be surprised how many older homes discharge "grey" water directly into drainage ditchs and swales. It is illegal here in my county and no grandfather clause either but it's still present.

Always amazed me people buying these older homes "as is" only to find out much later they have a waste water issue

Guess you get what you pay for.

County makes you hire a "Monitor" for the project. You go grab some 22 year old unemployed college student that thinks he/she is gonna save the world from environmental degradation, and Voila, everyone is happy.

"Monitor" can't tell s#!t from Shinola, contractor dumps whatever the hell he wants down the storm drain, college student sits on iphone googling s#!t and feeling important, county covered their ass and made a couple bucks in the process, and everyone is happy.

Yay! Isn't it great?

Re: What Is This Discharge?

It definitely looks like concrete washout...the crisco consistency is a dead give away, slippery as chit that stuff is. Are there indications of a foam like substance that floats on top? Probably everybody and their brother is washing out in the same drain.

What's the specifics of that project...they building houses?

Our pit is at the bottom of the yard...the color is similar.

the expression was "you don't know chit from shinola"....

could have referenced the condition of the polish on ones shoes...

or that they are just a dumb azz in general....

As far as I know it was an expression about a person's intelligence, shoe condition notwithstanding. "You don't know **** from shinola, that's why your shoes don't shine" inferring that the idoit used excrement to shine his shoes.
