Steel Buildings

I've been lurking around here for a while and would like to thank you all for the wealth of information that you so openly share and now I can use some help. One of the services we offer is the construction of elevator shafts for residential and light commercial elevators. I looked at a job today that is a steel building with steel purlins and siding and the elevator shaft will be constructed on the outside of the building. I need to cut a door in for the elevator on the second floor near the corner and I am not sure I can cut the corner cables and if so can I just tie them back into the purlins with a piece of angle iron? And after I cut the purlin can I just frame it in with wood and tie everything back together? Wall is the back wall and is load bearing. Roof appears to be a 2 or 3 pitch. Building is located in the lakes region of NH and does at times have significant snow loads.

Copy that.

Also, if you look at how a regular man-door is framed in this building, your new framing will have to be almost identical, only sized for the new elevator door.

Re: Steel Buildings

Cable or rod bracing is placed by an engineer for a specific purpose....the short answer is no, you cannot remove the bracing...as pointless as it seems to be, or function to serve, these cables are performing part of the structural bracing, and combined with the diaphragm action of the sheeting, keep everything square....if you just cut them, then you may overload the fasteners that hold the sheeting on....see the picture?
