One Hour Fire Seperation

Would like to get some idea's on a one fire separation between a B-firesprinkled and a A-2 occupancy? The problem I have is that the bar joists run through the fire wall @ 24inch centers. The B occupancy has fire sprinklers above the t-bar ceiling and the A-2 occupancy is going to be 5/8 type "X" directly over the bar joists. How do I wrap or go around the joists? This project is under the 2003 IBC. Any building inspectors out there? Mike

can you use fire rated caulking and piece in around the joist?

3M or Nelson fireproofing board, two 1 1/2" layers will get you a 2-hour rating over a PVC pipe, a wood joist or anything else. One layer will get you one hour rating.
We use this for horizontal grease ducts in commercial kitchens and always got the permit.

every inspector is different. Each area & inspector interprit the codes different.Just call up the building dept and ask. Some will allow firetaping others want fire caulking.

We use a different code in LA, but running the one hour up through the drop ceiling to isolate the two sides completely would be my call. Then treat each one individually according to your code.

Let me clarify, each penetration will need tumescent fire caulk, but the grids will need to terminate at each wall.

Re: One Hour Fire Seperation

The floor/roof structure cannot run through a "fire wall" under Section 705 of the IBC. If the wall is non-structural and only separates different occupancies it is a "fire barrier" under Section 706 and must only be continuous from the the floor to the underside of the slab above. Penetrations through the fire barrier must comply with Section 712 and more specifically 712.3. There are no specific prescriptive provisions (unless the wall is concrete or masonry) and all sealants or through-penetration firestop systems are required to be tested.

Under the IBC this building should have been designed by a design professional and that is the person who should provide you with the proper method.

Re: One Hour Fire Seperation

Is this a resturaunt /take -out? If this is only an accessory occupancy to the building and 10% of GLA a fire partition is allowed to terminate under a drop ceiling. The sprinklers are a credit but are not allowed to reduce the fire resistance rating of the wall. The more restrictive occupancy is the A-2 It sounds like a resturaunt was added to a seperate take out area so the wall is just a smoke partition since it can be classified as a non-seperated use if the criteria of the more restrictive occupancy is met. If your not sure create the full fire barrier through and between the joist with drywall and a Hilti type sealer.

You should determine if the wall is required to be a fire wall, a fire barrier, a fire partition, or a smoke barrier, before trying to detail it.
