Re: Non U To Union QuestionQuote:
The part you're leaving out is the corruption aspect and that is the 29 year guy is going to get the work because he's buddy buddy with a BA, while the guy who just bought his card sits at home on the out of work list. Doesn't matter who's on the list or what number they are. The new guy calls, get's on the list and waits 2,3,4 months. The 29 year guy get's laid-off from the last company, calls the BA at the union, and poof...next day he's got another job to go to. There's more corruption to talk about, but I actually don't feel like typing all day. |

Re: Non U To Union QuestionQuote:
Judge Continues Oversight of the Carpenters’ Union By STEVEN GREENHOUSE and WILLIAM K. RASHBAUM Published: August 12, 2008 from the NEW YORK TIMES: Citing continued corruption, a federal judge has ordered a one-year extension of government oversight of the New York City carpenters’ union, which has spent 14 years under supervision. Judge Charles S. Haight Jr. of Federal District Court in Manhattan pointed to widespread off-the-books work and the bribery convictions of several shop stewards in ordering the extension in a decision issued on Friday. Under the government’s supervision, Judge Haight and an independent investigator oversee the union. The union, the New York City District Council of Carpenters, which represents 25,000 carpenters, had asked Judge Haight to end the supervision, saying that the union was no longer under the influence of the Genovese crime family. The union signed a consent decree in 1994 agreeing to court-appointed supervision after federal prosecutors filed a civil racketeering lawsuit alleging that organized crime figures held sway over the union and assigned mob-linked workers to high-paying and no-show jobs at many sites, including the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Judge Haight rejected the union’s assertion that the standard for ending court-ordered supervision should be whether mob control of the union had ended. The judge, accepting the arguments of the United States attorney’s office, instead concluded that the standard should be whether all forms of corruption and labor racketeering had been eradicated. The judge also noted that rank-and-file carpenters had reported serious corruption earlier this decade. Investigators later found that out-of-work political supporters of union leaders were frequently allowed to jump the job-referral line and were assigned jobs before many carpenters who had been out of work longer. In asking that supervision be continued, the United States attorney’s office cited a “culture of corruption that continues to impede efforts to fight that corruption.”

Re: Non U To Union Question
[quote=Brickie;561881]Carpenters Union?? Oh really....tell that to the Federal Judge:
Judge Continues Oversight of the Carpenters’ Union It's these types of things that make me bang my head against the wall. All the good you do flies out the window with one instance like that. We're not in New york, but for those that are anti-union, thats beside the point. I hope the judge can get them right. just as a side note, we don't hire men from seniority here. I keep a list of good mechanics and a list of "never hire agains". If the local tries to send out one of my "never Hire agains", i reject them and have someone else sent out. Normally though, I call the men on my good list before i ever call the union hall. |

[quote=JMJ;562234]Sorry, JMJ this is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Union corruption. I, as well as plenty of other people can easily cite PLENTY of examples of union corruption. What state are you in JMJ?

Re: Non U To Union Question
[quote=Brickie;562281]I don't doubt what you say Brickie. I don't have my head buried that far in the sand. But I do believe in the union. We are in Northeast Ohio. Things aren't perfect here either, but it's still fairly strong. We have lost alot of the market share on small projects in the last 15 years. In the last couple years i have seen the drywall market completely beat down. Been seeing alot more illegals ruining it for union and non union alike. I sub off union and non union general contractors alike. It is getting harder here to win the job. My main point is that if you get rid of the unions, you get what has happened to the southern states. Its a freefall to the bottom. Very few get rich in the construction biz, so i strongly believe we need to protect our middle class. This business takes its toll on your body and you only have so many good years. Lets Hope for a decent 2009. I think its gonna be a tough year.

Re: Non U To Union Question
tangent-
well, the homers, (picketers, as apposed to good working union guys.) are still "demonstrating" hard on all our jobs often 20+ large or otherwise invaluable looking individuals. I think for the first week of this intensified approach there was a hint of uncertainty in the trade community. Now, i suspect that the joke is on them, though it's not really funny. Why would adult Americans act the way they do? They must feel threatened by non union companies and want to make an example out of us. Well I get the impression that they are making fools of themselves and only hurting there own image. They really are out of line. They scream there heads off for the few hrs. a day that they are there.- insult us and call us names that would be censored on this site. -I work side by side union guys and have no problems, though the individual who show up to picket us are a different breed. Most people that are on a job with those yahoos think it's ridiculous. If anything we get more respect because we put up with them everyday. I also think it is solidifying a non union idea that really wasn't there before. yeah a little rambling.. |
