New Door Install Help

Hello all,

I have drywalled a new storage area room at a commerical building. Now I need to make a doorway thou existing wall on the backside of the storage area. Does anybody know the dimensions that I should cut out of the wall for the door. I am putting in a 36" door and frame. After many years in handyman and maintenance business I have never cut a hole in a existing wall to make a doorway. Any help and advice you can give will help alot.

Thanks

Dennis

Re: New Door Install Help

really depends on whether or not the wall you are cutting into is load bearing or not

you said comm building, so i'll assume it's metal studs - make sure to cut carefully unless you just like being shocked or flooded, or both!

as far as the opening size, just go buy a prehung door and it will say right on the box "rough opening size requirements" (or don't buy it, just read the box)

I make it 1/2" wider and taller than the frame size, so you can shim it level and plumb when you set it

What is the exterior wall material? Concrete block, brick, stucco, wood, etc? Will you need lentils to support weight? just some additional things to think about. I agree though 1/2 to 1" is good room to wiggle.

Re: New Door Install Help

Standard procedure you make the opening plus 2" in both width and height.
IE 30" door RO is 32 x 6' 10". Standard height of RO will be 6-10 if normal 6-8 door. so Door width plus 2"

We really need more info on wall construction. masonry? stud wall? Load bearing? wall thickness? Size of door- I know a 36" width but is it 6-8 or 7-0? A commercial application usually a hollow metal door and metal frame, is this what your going to install?

I retrofit hollow metal doors/ frames all the time. Over all dementions of a 3-0, 7-0 is 40 1/8" by 86". Assuming this is a stud/ drywall wall, use a knock down frame to retrofit a 3-0, (assuming a 7-0), cut your opening to 38" by 85" . This will allow you shift the frame/ door side to side or by lifting hinge or strike side to compensate for an uneven floor- set your margins . Of course you want to re-frame your door opening like you would otherwise, tyeing everything back together. If its load bearing stud wall, then you will need to header it with jack studs.

Masonry wall: Then you need a welded frame, (6" width for inset) cut opening 1/2" larger then you door frame IE: 40 1/2" for a 36 wide door and you"ll need to lintel off the header as mentioned above, make sure the height from floor to bottom of lintel is 86 1/2 to give a little extra again, for a 84" tall door.
Hope this helps. This gives a rough explanation of what your wanting to do.

Re: New Door Install Help

I think your talking about a block wall, so im going to say masonary hollow metal welded, rough opening 40 1/4 and mason frames come with a 4 inch head so add that to the hieght of the door. The frame comes pre dimpled for your red heads or lags . and depending on the fire rating you might have to fill it with structo-lite.
