Bidding Advise

I'm getting my glass business started and wondering how to bid small to medium size jobs. Been in the business for 15 years but never done the business side of it. My question is this.....What is the best and most affective way to start bidding and recieving calls to be invited to bid?

I just started a London locksmith business and facing the same problem. I can tell you that I won some locksmith tenders only after hiring a third party company that advise me on each tender. when I tried to win locksmith jobs my self no one was interested in my locksmiths products but a specialist company won me some. I advise you to hire a professional specialized in your field marketing.

About a year ago we began actively marketing third parties- there are A LOT. Look for them via website and most have a "vendor inquiry/application/contact" section where you try to get "approved". They account for about 25% of our biz now and they keep calling. Try keywords like Facility Maintenance, Commercial Retail Maintenance. Also, in MD all government/local/college bids have to go through emarylandmarketplace.com, where you can sign up to get emails regarding applicable RFP's, etc... However, always, always skim the scope of services prior to wasting your time. If anything, it has given me a tool for what our biz needs under its belt, in order to go gov't big time. Also, make sure you register as a small biz with your state. All are a bit different... The SBA has an awesome mentor program... Either way, good luck. I came from the Occ Health industry and wrote technical pieces of those bids, either way, this industry is very, very different... it appears that you have to be willing to buy the freaking job and be big time to get in. Nonetheless, most sign-in sheets for pre-bid meetings are public and its nice to see who is "big-time" in your area and what they are up to.

1) Check into the competition rates
2) Analyze your worth or hourly skill rate (hsr)
3) Multiply your hsr times the hours to complete job. (Be sure to add b/up hours)
4) Check your total against the rates you collected from competition.
5) Adjust +/- where needed to achieve bid.

or, if there are no competitors available;

Add total cost of materials times 2 or 3 (depending on manpower), and go with that total. Hope this help and may God bless your work!
