Question

Stain On Concrete

Hey fellas,

I have a problem.

I have some concreting done in a charcoal colour. Now I built a hardwood timber fence/gate over the top on the side of the house. Now the other day we had a thunderstorm and the hardwood (Merbau) stained the concrete. I have not yet oiled the Merbau hardwood. Now, What can I use to remove the stain from the concrete, knowing it is coloured??

Please I need sugestions. Thanks.

Re: Stain On Concrete

Pumice is volcanic material that has a high silica. A stone is very abrasive, so you will be removing some of the concrete surface.

Depending on what you used to color the concrete, you could be creating a bigger problem by rubbing with an abrasive.

If you used a carbon-based material to color the concrete, you did not use a real pigment, but just mixed something like soot or charcoal into the concrete mix. Abrasion will wear off theand remove the black particles.

If you used a real pigment like a black iron oxide, it is more like a true stain that is 10 to 100 times finer than the cement. This is far more resistant to fading and is much more permanent. Iron oxides are the most permanent materials used to color concrete.

You could always try to wash off as much of the wood stains since is must have been somewhat water-soluable and was leached and deposited by rain.

Re: Stain On Concrete

You can try a light acid wash but the stain might be to deep. It sounds like it wasnt sealed if it stained it. Take some muriatic acid and water not much acid and try a VERY small area . It will take any highlights off and you will have to have it antiqued again but it will clean the concrete down to the point that you can see the aggregate so be careful .Another option is tinted sealer but if the stain is to dark it may not cover. It hard to say without seeing it. Good luck

Re: Stain On Concrete

Just for the record, I got it all off with using household bleach. I lightly rubbed it on the concrete stain, left it for 5 or so minutes, then washed it off with a hose. BINGO. All gone. Beautiful.
