Skim Coat Concrete And Stamping

As you can see by my profile I am a drywall guy and have no knowledge of concrete. My question is: Is it possible to pour a skim coat over an existing concrete pad and stamp it? Will it adhere? I currently have a 15' x 20' kidney shaped pad that was done 4 years ago. It looks alright, I just want to dress it up. Thanks for the help

They make polymer modified concrete products that go on very thin. Generally around 3/8" to 1/2". These can be normally bought at a specialty concrete distributor. Some places wont let you buy the product though unless you're certified.

You can do some research as to how its laid down and best way to go about it. Generally they are self-leveling, but some still need to be troweled.

I just joined this board and was reading posts and came across this post. If I'm out of line, please let me know. I teach this application and it works very well. I've applied thousands of square feet over the last 7 years and have not had a failure except for the occasional boat anchor being drug accross the surface and scratching it. The product I install actually becomes part of the surface. Some products are glued down and wont hold up to the freeze/thaw cycles here in the midwest. You really need to be trained to apply it correctly. Real inexpensive classes. Let me know if you would like further info and I can get that for you. gene

Wow, you do some pretty cool stuff. I've played with counter tops but I'm not that thrilled with the sealers available today. People think it's concrete and it's iron clad. You can apply a bullet proof topical sealer but scratches. Penetrating sealers stain....

I am just starting to play with table tops and outdoor kitchens.... in my spare time ha, ha! Still running a decorative concrete business and doing classes twice a month on overlays and installing commercial interior floors... sheesh

Way to busy to have a life. i wish this stuff was going 30 years ago instaed of pulling leaves off a tree and floating them into my fresh pour and then coloring it with shoe polish. gene

Re: Skim Coat Concrete And Stamping

You can put a stamped overlay down. You basically use a gauge rake at 1/4 in to put it out. The material is expensive $40 a bag(elite crete) Vortex polymers sells one for around $25. you only get around 20-25 per bag.

I only do Stamped overlays on areas where you can not otherwise rip out the concrete. I do not reccomend these on anywhere you have vehicular traffic.

These things take forever to do..one 5 gallon bucket at a time. Do your homework

I always perfer ripping it out and stamping it the right way. It's not much difference in price when you add the cost of materials. And it is stonger and most importantly the right way to do it.
