http://www.concreteexchange.com/ should get you started. I read his book and started looking for a guinea pig customer. Have fun with it.

Good Luck

thanks for the link. it might take me a while to ever take the pluge, if i do. i do plan on trying something for my personal home. do most of you pour in place or pour at your shop and move it in? is it possible to get a decent finish w/o a concrete vibrator using a palm sander and car buffer for finishing? if not, what do you use for finishing?

Diamond grit grinding discs and a wet grinder to finish the surface followed by a sealer to polish and protect it. I tried a palm sander (didn't think it was working very well) and a blade less sawzall (which didn't work much better). The end result was some poc marks in the surface. Made a small batch of portland + dye + bonding agent and filled most of them easy enough.

Grinding started at 50 grit and took 5 steps up to 1500 grit. On our project I used paste wax and a buffer for the seal and polish. There are much better products out there. Wax and heat, not so good for example.

Good Luck
Dave

great thread!
I just finished my first countertop (a vanity top approx. 5'x2' with a couple of jogs in it). I built the forms out of melamine, and used foam in the bottom of the form for a recess for the cabinet. I used quikrete countertop mix which i liked alot, and had pretty good luck with a palm sander for vibrating. My one regrettable mistake was mixing the material with a shovel instead of a mixer. I ended up with one small dime-size chunk of dry pack that ended up flaking out. I repaired it by mixing portland, color, and bonding agent (which worked fine).
One bit of advice i would add for patching/filling pits/etc. though, is make sure you dont spread the patching material over to much of the countertop. On my project it left a really light stain that soaked in a bit, and had to be ground out later.

......might try a coat of penetrating sealer before patching next time.
...anyone try that?
