Concrete Tile
Here is a concrete tile mural I just finished for a building center. This section is 12 feet along the bottom edge. It was a pain in the ass but I am done. Ok...it was fun too.

Re: Concrete Tile
how did you make the mold?
or did you buy it from somewhere? and how did you color the concrete? did you just paint it afterwards?

Re: Concrete Tile
I made the molds by carving with routers and knives into 4x8 sheets of white azex. It is about $300 a sheet or more but worth it. The color is added to the concrete mix. There are some great colors out there now. The blues and greens are way better than they used to be in terms of being light fast. I also used white cement to bring out more of the color.

Re: Concrete Tile
I am speechless and curious. How long did it take you to complete the project?

Re: Concrete Tile
Thanks for the kind words. It took about a month and a half to carve the molds, a month to pour all the tile and a few months to install the work. I made some judgment errors that doubled the installation time. I don't do only public art jobs. I also make large concrete sculptural elements, concrete counters and other art forms. I get public art jobs every two years or so. I have been an artist my whole life but I also worked in cabinet shops or built houses with contractors until my art took off. The last fifteen years I have been living just off my art. Yea baby! My website is http://www.johnkingart.com I scored a used 26' scissor lift down in San Francisco to use on this last public art job which saved me alot in rental fees. I brought it up to Eureka and now our one story house has a three story addition for only $2,500. I always wanted a house with a view of the ocean. Now I have two views of the ocean and one of humboldt bay. Every nice sunset I am up there in a chair with a glass of wine.
