Concrete Popping?

Recently, I poured a driveway for a customer that after 4-5 months started to flake off or pop off on the top. I realize salt use in the winter would cause this, however the homeowner assured me he did not use any salt. Another contractor says the mix from the plant, probably the sand, was dirty. I have poured concrete for 15 years and never had this happen. Is there something I did to cause this problem, or is it dirty sand?

Re: Concrete Popping?

Is it popping down to the stone? It could be caused by AAR - Pop out caused by Alkali-Aggergate Reactions. This is where the stone actually burst in two and causes a pop out in the concrete. Here is a better definition.

Alkali-aggregate reaction is a term mainly referring to a reaction which occurs over time in concrete between the highly alkaline cement paste and non-crystalline silicon dioxide, which is found in many common aggregates. This reaction can cause expansion of the altered aggregate, leading to spalling and loss of strength of the concrete.
