Concrete home

Has anyone ever worked on the construction of an all concrete home?

We did some repair on a large home built 1910 ish that was all concrete except the roof. I looked at a job at an "all" concrete house built 1930 ish. I've seen some articles and the concrete home website but I'd like to talk to guy's who've done the work.

I have had a bunch of ideas for along time about building a masonry and concrete home.

We built 3 back in the 60's. Dutch set block, shot with rebar, topcap and block all poured in one shot. Conventional roofing though.

I designed one 25 yrs. ago that is a series of poured hemispheres. The local building dept. shot it down as they do with anything that they don't understand. Talk about hurricane-proof!

teetor - aren't most homes in Florida concrete??

In the time I spent in Fl. - it's all I saw ...

another thing ... maybe 1/1,000 homes exceeded one story

my boss at the time told me why - can't remember though but I remember thinking after he told "man, he just pulled that fresh outta his a@@"

The home i am currently building is an ICF home...6 inch walls between 5 inches of EPS...but it will be a trussed roof with metal panel sheeting. Pictures soon.

Dirt, It depends on where you are and when your home was built. They relaxed the code to 120 MPH and even 110 back in the late 60's to allow for development. Pics of Kendall after Andrew shows what a wise choice that was.

No way that I'd ever live in a wood home here with the exception of the REAL old Dade County pine homes. They may be stronger than concrete.

My old boss had us build his ICF house. Started with 10" block, then 8", then 6". The next winter we did an addition. I really enjoyed doing them.
