Backyard Patio

My in-laws have a concrete patio in the backyard. I stopped by the other day and my father in-law asked me if i could do something with the cracks in the patio. so i went out to take a look and see what he was talking about and thats where my question comes in. The patio is quite abit higher that the grade. It comes up to a doorwall in the back of the house but it must be a good 14 to 16 inches tall and about 18' x 18'. Well the control joints have cracked and the winter took its toll( I think it is caused by water freezing and expanding forcing the what now appears to be 4 seperate slabs apart). Anyway the joints are at least an inch and more apart and I was wondering what would be the best approach to filling in these gaps and sealing them off so next winter the water is kept out. Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

Re: Backyard Patio

Be careful. Sometimes people have false expectations about work done on cracks. You can fill cracks to protect the slab from the elements but you can never really repair cracks. Many people are more interested in filling cracks for cosmetic reasons. Filling cracks is like putting a band aid on a broken leg. I would use a flexible crack filler that is cheap and can be found at any hardware store. The only purpose is to protect the slab.
