I just hope I am not embarrassing myself here. This is my first one.

So I'm very impressed by this quick demo, and while not looking at chief for only decking needs, it will be one of my main uses of the software. I'm curious how optimized Chief is for exporting these files into something usable to pull permits. I currently am using Sketchup for my renderings for clients (which I totally recommend to others, but hate then having to draft plans in another system.

Chief is highly "optimized" for creating construction documents, this is part of what it does so well. There are of course other cad software out there like Revit, Archicad, TurboCAD, SolidBuilder, SoftPlan and others that are all good software for creating computer models and cad drawings too.
I just prefer Chief because of it's relative ease of learning, price, function, rendering capabilities and other reasons. Where I to limit myself to just decks or staircases I would probably get a more specialized software for that industry though.

It does look like chief will be the way to go for me. We end up doing all sorts of remodels, so versatility is the most important feature in our first piece of construction specific software.

I look forward to asking more specific questions as to how to use the thing down the road.

What was it that you do that you need to draft it in another cad program?

Those are some pretty sweet looking details mics, very nice. I think he may be using the free Sketchup though and does not have the 'Layout' that comes with the pro version.
Sketchup Pro is only about $600.00, mightbe a very nice investment for you Andrew.

Re: Cheif Architect Or Deck Tools

Andy I'm not sure if the examples I borrowed from the sketchup site were produced entirely in sketchup but I think they were. I know layout makes some very nice doculents but some of the details may be imported from a cad program. I don't own a SU pro license mainly because my hardware in my pc is antiquated. I plan on upgrading some day soon. Of course once you get comfortable with a program and you own a seat and the upgrades are alot cheaper it's certainly best to stay in that group. I've had pretty good luck with SU and TC but have always liked Chief Arch. I'm getting less interested in turbocad since I began using SU. I also like SU's ruby development abilities and the wide interest in third party plugins. This is something TC dropped some time ago...a mistake afaic.

Cool video Dave, you'll have to post some images when you get 'em done.
