Can anyone tell me what these are?
They have little wings that fall off. I looked in the cellar and there appears to be a burrowed trail, like carpenter ants and termites leave, going up a post and into the floor.

i dont think those are it...though they have very similar attributes.
I cant see something that survives in KY living here.
The damage they leave seems a little different from the damage described. I will take some pics of it too.
(You guys are gonna love the scary hack job in this cellar)

Sir, I am sorry to report that you have termites. That's right, ladies and gentlemen, honest to goodness termites! Now don't worry too much, they won't cause the house to fall if you fail to act now, but at some point you (or the ho) will have to have them treated. If this is the ho's house, check for damage further up the trail.
If its your house, bummer.

A customer had them here about 8 years ago.
Evans Pest controll (don't know if they are national) took care of the problem so far.
Do some research and find a good exterminator pronto!
They must bait the ground and make multiple visits. simply spraying will not work.
Good Luck

Subterranean Termite is your answer. When you said wings fall off was the ultimate clue but the pic is perfect. Termites have straight antennae and bodies. You can compare them to verify if you like.
You should get it treated for sure. It will seem to get better because the swarmers 'disappear', but the real damage is still being done by the workers.
