Question

Insulating Crawl

What is the best way to insulate between the floor joists of a crawl space? I have seen many different applications, and they all seem to have their problems.

The best way is by hiring a contractor familiar with insulating crawlspaces

The second best way is by Posting on contractor talk and hope some one answers you

I think you have a better chance at answer 1 than at answer 2

Re: Insulating Crawl

Go to www buildingscience com/doctypes/building-science-insights/ and down load document BSI-009, New Light in Crawlspaces. Should answer your questions.

Insert periods in place of spaces in the above underlined text string to get the URL.

It's more difficult to answer questions
for folks in the witness protection program.
If you were in my part of the world, the answer
is don't insulate the joist, but we don't know
where you are.
Ask your Federal Marshall liaison.

Re: Insulating Crawl

Best way is no insulation at all. We already answered this. Insulate the perimeter. Install moisture control and improve drainage if necessary. Get that space warm and dry.

Re: Insulating Crawl

Depends in the conditions, perimeter insulation is good but not always practical

Re: Insulating Crawl

We just did a crawl and installed R-19 between the floor joist. I was an insurance job and that's how they wanted it done. Raccoons got in there before and tore all the old batts down.
